A Display Typeface
Whimsy
Inspired by Yayoi Kusama
In this project I was assigned to create a typeface based off a historical figure of my choice. The project consisted of creating a display typeface of both uppercase and lowercase characters along with some popular used glyphs. After finalizing the final typeface, I was to create a type specimen book where I would cover the biography of my chosen historical figure. The type specimen book also covers the type anatomy, and grid system which was a challenging yet enjoyable aspect of the typography design.
Design Concept
Whimsy is a combination of a serif and sans serif typeface. It was inspired by Yayoi Kusama and her whimsical artwork.
The typeface captures the essence of not only her quirky and colorful artwork, but her personality as well. The curvature and dotted elements of the typeface capture the graceful and stylish personailty of Kusama.
Kusama is vivid and eccentric, and these elements are applied to the playful thick and thin curvy and straight lines seen throughout the letterforms.
